演講主題 Grammar in Context: Grammar Instruction of Elementary Chinese and Intermediate Chinese

Research has shown that learners benefit from grammar instruction (Celce-Murcia, Dornyei and Thurell, 1997; Ellis, 1998) and the need for grammar instruction is once again attracting the attention of second language acquisition (SLA) researchers and teachers. Practitioners of TCSL, are exploring new approaches to grammar instruction, especially teaching grammar in context.

This presentation presents a Grammar in Context Project for Elementary Chinese and Intermediate Chinese. Following the latest research in grammar instruction, this project designs communicative tasks for the grammar points/constructions of Elementary and Intermediate Chinese as a main part of grammar instruction. While carrying out these tasks, students are constantly made to be aware of the target forms. They will be provided with repeated meaning-focused exposure of the forms and ample opportunities for output and practice. The ultimate goal of the project is to facilitate students’ acquisition of the Chinese language and meanwhile provides new TCSL instructors with a data bank of classroom activities of each and every grammar point in both Elementary and Intermediate Chinese for their reference.

演講主題 An Analysis of Proficiency Development in Speaking, Reading, and Listening for College Students

演講摘要

根據美國外交學院及美國國防語言學院所作的統計,中文對母語為英語的成人學習者而言是最難的語言之一,爲了達到優級水平(ACTFL水平能力等級)需要兩千多小時。目前還沒有有關成人學習中文之能力進程方面的研究。本報告收集美國一所領航中心約一百名大學生學習中文時在聽力、口語、以及閲讀三方面的測驗成績來看學生由初級進步到中級以及從中級進步到高級水平所需時間,並且分析不同背景學生(華裔、有背景非華裔、無背景非華裔)所需學習時間是否有差異並且根據分析結果提出教學相關建議。
According to the Foreign Service and Defense Language Institutes, Mandarin Chinese is one of the most difficult languages for English speakers to learn. Achieving Superior level (ACTFL scale) proficiency requires more than 2000 hours of instruction. Currently, there are no studies available on how much time adult learners need to advance their language proficiency. This study collects proficiency test results in speaking, listening, and reading from approximately 100 students to see how much time is required for students to move from novice level to intermediate level, and from intermediate level to advanced level. It also examines whether students with different learning backgrounds (Chinese heritage, non- Chinese with background, and non-Chinese without background) require the same amount of time. Teaching implications based on the findings will be provided.

演講摘要 本文提出,以屏幕電書為基本特征的漢字書寫工具和書寫方式的當代改變,成就了漢字書寫的二次革命,確切地表明了漢語書面交際方式第三個時代的到來。文章具體分析屏幕電書時代對漢語書面交際能力的深刻變化,從外語教學的效益最優化原則出發,思考屏幕電書時代漢字教學的因應策略,並結合加州大學戴維斯分校的教學實踐,討論與時俱進的漢字教學方案。
